Over the course of a weekend in June, we decided to start an honest conversation. We launched Conversation Starters to promote open discussion with questions that define our global situation. Some of these questions were challenging, difficult and even uncomfortable. We were humbled to read the thoughtful, anonymous answers shared by our open-minded and brave visitors.
One of these questions was this: Have you ever made a decision based on fear? This question was inspired by PTY | Fairfield’s TRIBUNAL, a performance project presented at the MCA that let viewers step into the shoes of refugees and asylum seekers. It went beyond storytelling to explore the experiences of those who recently arrived in Australia. Our Conversation Starters question reflected on how we make decisions, especially important ones, and what choices we might have made out of fear both in our personal lives and in the global arena.
Conversation Starters was inspired by artist Kader Attia, whose work is in its final days at the MCA. Attia’s work explores themes of power, fear and colonialism through powerful artworks. Come see the exhibition before it says goodbye on 30 July.
